Píšová, Denisa ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Köpplová, Barbara (referee)
The aim of the thesis entitled Media Education through the lens of the professional teaching community is to identify the issues and topics that appear in the discourse on media education in the Czech Republic, especially from the perspective of teachers and experts dealing with this issue. Using theoretical foundations based primarily on the framework curricula and surveys from recent years and content analysis of online discussions under news articles, the state of media education in the Czech Republic will be investigated. These findings will be subsequently verified and questioned through in-depth interviews with stakeholders from the school and educational institutions environment. Thus, two qualitative methods will be used in the analytical part, which will increase the reliability of the research results. A secondary purpose of the research is the possibility of further testing the resulting hypotheses or questions, for example through a questionnaire survey. Thanks to in-depth interviews, it is also possible to gain a broader insight into the issues of contemporary media education, which has been the focus of few studies or surveys in the Czech Republic in recent years. This is also important because of the forthcoming revisions of the Framework Educational Programmes, which should improve...

Gregor, Rudolf ; Wolák, Radim (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
The bachelor thesis entitled "YouTube as a space for modern English language learning" deals with the characteristics of a successful YouTube channel dedicated to English language learning. The goal of the thesis is to identify specific elements that are typical for a successful video of a given focus using the method of quantitative content analysis of a selected sample of reactions of users of a given media message in the form of comments under the most watched video. Prior to the actual research part of the thesis, it offers a reflection on the origins of communication and its development through media to mass media and new media, it also discusses the use of media and new media in education through a mixed perspective of media studies and pedagogy, and highlights several disciplinary and interdisciplinary scholarly works exploring the issue in the context of the use of different types of new media in education. The chapter on the origins of the social network YouTube, in the language of numbers and statistics, also mentions the current enormous reach of this media space and precedes the research section, in which the thesis already describes the most watched video for three popular YouTube channels dedicated to English language learning, the channels under study in general and, in particular,...
The Western Ideal of Beauty Portayed in Fashion Magazines and Its Influence on Vietnamese Women's Perception of Beauty
Tranová, Thi Viet Chinh ; Soukup, Martin (advisor) ; Ivanišová, Markéta (referee)
This bachelor thesis examines the impact of Western beauty standards portrayed in fashion magazines on Vietnamese women. The theoretical part provides insight into the phenomenon of beauty itself, which the author then places in the context of the media and the media's portrayal of idealized images. The thesis thus offers the most frequently repeated negative impacts on individuals who have been exposed to idealized images of beauty. The aim of this thesis was to explore the impacts of Western ideals of beauty on Vietnamese women, who differ from these standards due to their genetic and physiological predispositions. In this study a qualitative research method was used, in which thirteen Vietnamese women ranging in age from eighteen to thirty-seven were interviewed. From the results of the analyzed data, it was found that the interviewed women put little emphasis on fashion magazines in shaping their perception of beauty and self-image. Thus, two levels of findings were uncovered in the research. The first part examined the specific situations where the portrayed ideal of beauty actually influenced the perception of beauty of the participating Vietnamese women. The second part further explored the reasons why these women placed such a low value on these magazines. In summary, the analysis uncovered...
Evalution of the media image of seniors in the town of Čáslav
MATOUŠKOVÁ, Dita
This diploma thesis deals with how old people are presented in the media, and how this media image is then perceived by other age groups. The aim of the work was to find out how the inhabitants of the town of Čáslav evaluate the media image of seniors in society. In the theoretical part of the work I focus on explaining the concepts of aging and old age. Since this work deals with seniors, I consider it an important explanation of the basic concept of senior, and I add to this the sciences that deal with the process of aging and old age, here gerontology and geriatrics. I also mention stereotypes and myths associated with old age. In the next part of the theoretical work, I explain the concepts of media image, mass media, their division and function. I also focused on the description of the current picture of old age in society, as well as on the impact of the media on the public. In the last part of the theoretical work, I described topics related to seniors and the policy of aging. I also describe the active aging of the population and the strategic documents and action plans that relate to aging. To achieve the goal of the work, a quantitative research strategy was used, where the method of data collection was performed by questioning on the basis of their own questionnaire. The research group consisted of residents of the town of Čáslav, in the age range from 18 to 64 years. In total, I received questionnaires from 273 respondents. The obtained data were processed using descriptive statistics in MS Excel, the subsequent evaluation of hypotheses took place in SPSS, where the Chi-square test or goodness-of-fit test was used, and also using frequencies. I believe that this research could open up further opportunities for discussion about depicting the real image of seniors to the lay and professional public. The obtained results could trigger a social debate focused on the ethical aspects of the current modern way in which the media inform about topics related to seniors. Furthermore, the work could help uncover possible new ways of stereotyping and describe whether or not the media support prejudices about a large and growing group of seniors.

Šmídová, Radka ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Cihlářová, Gabriela (referee)
Bachelor thesis named 'Role of the Guardian daily newspaper in the British press market' consist of three parts. The first part deals with the mass print and its development in Great Britain. There is a brief history of the very first daily papers appearing in 18th century, their rise during the industrial revolution in the first half of 19th century, followed by the period of press barons, and finally 20th century in the name of large media conglomerates. The contemporary press market is examined from the social class perspective, typical for Great Britain, with the spreading tabloidization increasingly affecting the serious news as well as the growing power of the internet. The mutual influence of media and politics is also very important, mainly in connection with the owner effects. The whole second part is dedicated to the Guardian daily newspaper, mainly to its history dating back to 1821, when the Guardian was established in Manchester as a regional newspaper named the Manchester Guardian. The original title was used until 1959. One of the most interesting aspects of the current Guardian is its website created back in 1999. The third part of the work brings the Media Guardian analysis, namely in the context of other sections of the paper and the content of the Guardian in the years 1990 and...

Čihák, Marek ; Trampota, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kruml, Milan (referee)
The present thesis entitled "Programme Diversity of Czech Nationwide Television Channels in the Years 1998 - 2006" focuses on the normative requirement of the society regarding the diversity of mass media, and the approach of mass media thereto: we distinguish between media diversity introduced in the market media model and the diversity presented as part of the public sphere media model. Furthermore, this thesis attempts to search for and determine the requirements regarding media diversity as laid down in the applicable legislation of the Czech Republic or the European Union. The research part of the thesis deals with one of the many levels of diversity in the mass media environment, particularly the diversity of television programme types, i.e. television genres accepted by the interest groups: academics, broadcasters or audiences etc. The present analysis includes nationwide TV stations providing analogue broadcasting via terrestrial transmitters in the years 1998 to 2006, focusing on majority audience - Czech TV1, Prima TV and TV Nova. By means of the Relative Entropy Index and the Deviation Index the diversity of the offered programme types is examined both on the vertical level (a single selected TV station) and on the horizontal level (across the monitored TV stations). The application of...

The work also provides an evaluation of various streams of possible development of critique of media to the future.
Czech Literary criticism on internet
Kučera, Štěpán ; Kraus, Jiří (advisor) ; Čeňková, Jana (referee)
This rigorous thesis surveys Czech literary criticism on internet and its relationship towards printed literary criticism, or generally, relationship between new and traditional media. I define what "Czech literary criticism on the internet" can mean, and describe its situation in 2009 and 2012. I created an imaginary central line going from the pole of traditional media to the pole of new media and aligned the groups of websites on this scale. I found important projects there that exist in the periphery of Czech literary life (as reflected by the traditional media). Then I asked members of the web projects to fill in a short questionnaire focused on literary criticism on internet and its relationship to the culture of traditional media. Also, I posed the same questions to Czech book publishers as representatives of the traditional culture. In comparison of 2009 and 2012 I found out that the websites connected to the traditional printed culture tend to parish, or on the contrary, transform into professional projects (usually with state financial support). The closer to the pole of new media, the more viable the websites tend to be. I also notices increasing role of social networks, such as Facebook. For some websites these networks have become a welcome platform to address wider audience, while for others...
